The Madera County community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Esmeralda Gutierrez, who tragically died following a two-vehicle collision at Avenue 17 and Road 28 ½ late Tuesday night. Her sudden passing has left family, friends, and loved ones devastated as they come to terms with the loss of a young life full of promise.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 9:46 p.m. when Esmeralda, driving a white 2018 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound on Avenue 17, reportedly failed to stop at a posted stop sign. Her vehicle was struck on the right side by a black 2019 Jeep Wrangler traveling southbound with the right-of-way.
The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to veer southeast, where they struck a parked vehicle and a support beam at a nearby residence before coming to rest at the intersection. Esmeralda was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 19-year-old passenger in her vehicle, identified as Bobby Criado, sustained critical injuries and was transported to the hospital. Sadly, according to a GoFundMe organized by his family, his injuries were later determined to be not survivable.
Others involved in the crash, including a 21-year-old female passenger in the Chevrolet and occupants of the Jeep, suffered minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Authorities have stated that alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the crash, though investigations remain ongoing to determine the full circumstances.
As the community mourns, tributes and support continue to pour in for the families affected by this tragedy. Fundraisers have been organized to help loved ones cope with funeral expenses and the difficult days ahead.
Esmeralda Gutierrez will be remembered for the life she lived and the impact she had on those around her. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
